Hopes combined unit for Stonehaven may open next year.
A planning application has been lodged for a joint Marks and Spencer and Aldi retail unit at Stonehaven’s Ury Estate.
Plans have been lodged with Aberdeenshire Council for the much-anticipated retail unit on the estate, which includes a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course as well as housing.
Consent has already been granted for a supermarket on the development, just off the A957 Slug Road at Ury Estate, and agreement was reached with M&S and Aldi earlier this year to share the 3,750sqm site.
Subject to updated permissions and the completion of legal agreements with both retailers, Ury Estate hopes the stores will open to the public next year, providing a much-needed retail outlet for residents as well as the wider Stonehaven area.
Alex Milne from Ury Estate Developments said it was another positive step forward.
“We are very pleased to lodge a planning application for a much anticipated retail destination. We have been working for some time with the teams at Aldi and M&S to get this proposal pulled together and submitted,” he said.
“We feel this will be a great benefit to Stonehaven and thank the local committee and the council for their patience and support. We look forward to delivering the next stage of the development, which features golf, homes and infrastructure along with the reinstatement of Ury Castle. The retail element of the development is a very welcome addition to both the project and the local community.”
With the hope that work could start on site later this summer ahead of a potential opening in 2027, detailed discussions are continuing with contractors who have expressed an interest in the project.
Funding was secured for the Ury Estate development and golf course in 2025, with work now well underway ahead of a planned phased opening later this year.
The £20million funding agreement from Oaknorth Bank cemented Ury Estate as one of the most eagerly anticipated masterplanned developments in Scotland.
There has already been considerable early interest in both Nicklaus Village, a collection of 59 luxury homes overlooking the golf course, and Glen Ury View, which will offer 187 family houses and bungalows, ahead of their official launch.
Several of the golf holes are due to open for play this year, with the full course expected to open in 2027.
Mr Nicklaus previously said he was “enormously pleased” with the design of the course, which he said would be enjoyed by golfers for many generations.
